DANGAR ISLAND HOUSE

Located on Dangar Island on the Hawkesbury River in New South Wales, the site for this house presented several challenges. There is no road access to the island and no vehicles on the island, so all access for the construction of this house was via boat. In addition, the site was subject to the highest bushfire attack level category ‘Flame Zone’.  Built by an engineer & owner-builder, the design for the house utilised steel components made in small sections, allowing more manageable transport and installation. The house was designed as two pavilions, sited to nestle around a stand of existing, very slow growing grass trees (Xanthorrhoea) on the site, almost all of which were able to be retained. The metallic and grey palette of zinc galvanised steel, aluminium and fibre cement create a neutral and robust home that will stand the test of time.
